Testimonials

Elizabeth was the most phenomenal doula every step of the way- from prepping in our prenatal meetings, to incredible birth day guidance, to phenomenal postpartum support. She gracefully and non judgmentally held space for all parts of the process of birth and becoming parents for both my partner and I, in body, mind and soul. And she guided us in decision making and planning with kindness through her expertise and by instilling confidence in our instincts.
On the birth day, she supported us virtually during Covid. I wasn’t sure if it would feel sufficient but she was truly with us every step of the way. I was able to achieve my birthing goals due in large part to her guidance (and also due to luck!); I had an incredible satisfying birth experience. Nothing can compare to the support of an experienced doula who has seen this process so many times; she’s calm, confident and flexible. Postpartum, she nourished us as depleted new parents, and helped us work through the emotional hurdles we didn’t know were coming.
Other than my husband, no one has seen me in as raw a state as Elizabeth has, and I felt so safe with her. I truly want to have more babies just so I can do it with Elizabeth. My gratitude is endless.

Working with you was wonderful. You made our experience with childbirth the best it could be. As the birthing partner, I had a significant amount of concern about how we were going to deliver in a medical system I was leery of as a first-time parent. Both my wife and I work in medicine, but this was our first childbirth. From the start, you were very professional, calm and knowledgeable. You understood our needs, demonstrated an amazing amount of experience and helped us establish the birth plan we wanted. We genuinely appreciated how available you were, your flexibility and your follow-up. Ultimately, you gave me the confidence and tools I needed to be an educated, supportive and effective birth partner. We felt fully supported by you every step of the way. Specifically, towards the end of our delivery when we were exhausted, and I felt overwhelmed, you confidently guided us through the most significant experience of our life. Thank you again for everything.

Cared for, calm, and confident are the feelings I had going into my birthing day, thanks to having Elizabeth as my doula. Leading up to the birth, Elizabeth helped me identify areas of concern I had, and to address those concerns in advance. Through the process, she actually made me feel excited about labor. Whether it was practicing breathing techniques, or developing code words to signal when I needed specific types of support, she helped me develop useful tools and plans to draw upon. During labor, I found it incredibly useful the way Elizabeth helped me understand information coming from my medical team and to formulate critical questions that enabled me make my own informed decisions. She provided massage through each contraction, and was an incredibly respectful and loving source of support to myself and my family through the entire experience. Thank you Elizabeth for making my birthing experience such a positive one!

Elizabeth prepared food for me and my husband on multiple occasions, while I was on strict bedrest, pregnant with fraternal twins. She was a Godsend. Not only was the food delicious, nutritious, and well prepared- but they were also such good ideas! I still rotate some of her ideas into our family meals. Beyond the amazing food, it was just such a welcome relief to be able to relinquish control to someone that could find her way around a kitchen. I also really appreciated the time she took to understand our eating choices-and then used that information to generate awesome meals for me to choose from. This was especially helpful on the days I didn’t feel like eating anything at all. I wholeheartedly recommend her services!

We were blessed to have Elizabeth as our Doula on the birth of our first son. Her calm, kind and supportive manner, and informed advocacy were invaluable. In the meetings leading up to the birth, Elizabeth provided helpful questions and thinking points in order to allow us to imagine a birth plan and feel prepared for alternates while not feeling overwhelmed. She is very empowering, helping me to feel in control of decisions while offering valuable insights from her training, personal experience and intuition. On the day of the birth, she was wonderfully adept at knowing when to hold space, when to check in and how to help my husband engage with the process. I am sure her presence and advocacy was one of the things that helped me to have a healthy vaginal birth at a hospital. I can not recommend Elizabeth highly enough. I think she is so well suited to be a Doula. She was a gift, as I am sure she is to all he clients.

Elizabeth Mekuria was our doula for the birth of my son who is now 12 years old. Elizabeth has a unique sense of calmness and clarity that is extremely comforting and I am certain that our amazing experience was directly influenced by her loving and compassionate qualities. She is one of the most caring and trustworthy people. I feel very honored that she attended our birth. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a doula.

About Me

I am Elizabeth Mekuria, mother of 3, a trained birth and postpartum doula, HypnoBirthing® educator, Certified Breastfeeding Counselor, Reiki Master and I prepare healthy plant-based meals for families. I’m living in and serving Addis Ababa and New York City.

Since becoming a mother I've found a way to connect my passions for supporting humans, social justice, the miracle of birth and my love of delicious whole foods.

I believe deeply in the power of women. As a mother myself I know the importance of support.  I provide non-biased ongoing support during your birth and postpartum time.

As a vegan for more than 20 years, I used to struggle to find food that was truly delicious and nutritious so I set out to learn how to prepare the foods that I was seeking. Since having children I've worked to adapt to my body's nutritional needs during pregnancy, postpartum and to feeding my growing family.
